Tom Howa

Tom Howa has been with the University of Utah as the Associate Direction of Business Intelligence since December 2014. Before working for the University, he spent nine years at Zions Bancorp, working as a BI manager. Tom has a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from Utah State University and a Master of Science in Information Systems from the University of Utah. He is also a Certified Business Analysis and Business Intelligence Professional. He enjoys cooking for his family, playing with his two dogs, and reading high fantasy novels.

Bryan Harman

Bryan Harman has worked for the University of Utah since 1993. A Senior Data Architect, he ETLs data from operational systems to the data warehouse. Prior to working for the University, he worked for IBM, during which time the University of Utah was one of his customers. He has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University. Bryan plays the piano and goes to the gym 4-5 times a week. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles and the daily Jumble. The accomplishment he is most proud of is successfully raising his two children.

Frank Fowler first started with the University of Utah when programmers were still chiseling code into stone and was given the Service Excellence Award in 2006. Frank has also worked for Western Governors University as the Lead Oracle Database Administrator. He has a Bachelor of Science in Data Processing from Utah Technical College (now Salt Lake Community College). Frank is blissfully married with two stepsons and five grandkids.

Brian Harris has been with the University of Utah for nine years. A Senior Data Warehouse Analyst, he primarily writes code to move data between various databases. In his time, he has also worked for StarRez in Denver, Colorado. Brian has two degrees from the University of Utah, a Bachelor of Arts in Information Systems and a Master of Science in Information Systems. He is happily married with three children and enjoys biking, skiing, ice cream, and not being stuck in traffic.

Paul Peterson has worked for the University of Utah since September 2013. A Business Intelligence Developer, he provides support for the Student Data Warehouse. He has also worked in the Office of Admissions in Admission Systems. Before joining the University, he worked for the Department of Workforce Services and the Utah State Office of Education. He has three degrees from the University of Utah, a Bachelor of Science in Economics, a Master of Public Health, and a Master of Public Administration. Paul is a proud parent who loves Dr. Seuss (and uses his daughter as an excuse to read it).

Jawahir Ahamedkasim has been working for the University of Utah since November 2015. He is a Senior Data Warehouse Analyst, which entails writing code to move data between systems and to store it in a place to support Reporting and Analytics. Jawahir has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Anna University in India and a Master of Science in Information Systems from the University of Utah and is also ITIL v3 and Six Sigma Green Belt Certified. Hailing from Southern India, Jawahir speaks Tamil and Hindi in addition to English. He likes cooking, playing volleyball, watching Netflix, and traveling. He also just got married!

Christian Updyke

Christian Updyke joined the BICOE in August 2017 as a Senior Business Analyst. Prior to working for the University of Utah, he worked in banking and finance where he focused on business and systems analysis and analytics. Christian has four degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (University of Utah) and Masters of Science degrees in both Business Information Technology and Predictive Analytics (DePaul University). He is an artist who enjoys visiting cultural and artistic venues and events.

Tyler Ford

Tyler Ford has been working for the University of Utah since 2015. A Senior Data Architect, he focuses on the performance and scalability of the BI platform and big data design and implementation, among other things. In years past, he has worked as a SQL Server Consultant, the SQL Server Principal Architect for Fanzz, a Systems Administrator for Larry H. Miller, and a C# .Net Database Tier Developer for Myroons Inc., to name a few. Tyler holds two degrees – a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Science with an Emphasis in Psychology from Utah Valley University and a Master of Science in Information Systems from Minot State University. He is also a Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: SQL Server 2012/2014, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Data Management and Analytics Charter Member, and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Data Platform. An avid biker, Tyler has completed the Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride (a 115-mile, single-day ride) as well as 25 century bike rides. He is happily married with two kids and lives on a small dairy farm. He loves all things outdoors in addition to any books relating to databases and database platforms.

Shailaja Singh

Shailaja Singh started working as a student intern in the Machine Learning Innovation Group in February 2018. Her specialty is data science, so some of her work includes providing actionable insight using data. She is in the Computer Science master’s program and looks forward to applying her data science skills to real-world problems once she graduates. Before coming the University of Utah, she graduated from the University of Mumbai with a Bachelor in Engineering then worked as a Technological Analyst for EdgeVerve/Infosys, where she received the GEM Young Achiever award. An international student from India, she speaks Hindi, Marathi, and English and misses her sweet mom, awesome dad, and even her idiot brother.
Rodrigo Grotewold

Rodrigo Perez Grotewold joined the Machine Learning Innovation Group as a student intern in March 2018, though he has previously worked for the IT department of Rice-Eccles Stadium. Already holding a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and a Master of Business Administration from the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, Guatemala, he is a full-time student pursuing a Master in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Information Systems as a concurrent degrees’ candidate. During his time in Guatemala, he worked as a consultant for Franklin Covey, an IT Manager and Professor at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, and an Operations Manager for Grupo Entero. Rodrigo plans to graduate in Spring 2019, after which he hopes to work in Business Intelligence or Product Management. Rodrigo has three children, a gymnast, a ballet dancer, and a taekwondo green belt. His hobbies include yoga, hiking, running, and (recently) skiing.
