Data Governance Mission Statement

Utilize data management standards, data models, collaboration,  and transparency to help departments expand their data usage and analysis.

Data Governance Roles

Data Stewards

Data Stewards are University officials appointed by the Vice President responsible for their functional area. Their responsibilities are as follows:

Data Access

  • Establish standards to ensure accessibility of data, and specify conditions for data use.
  • Initiate data sharing procedures, and respond to denied data requests.

Data Security

  • Design best practices to assure security of data, and enforce adherence to data security policies.
  • Create procedures for handling different data types (restrictive, sensitive, and public).

Data Integrity

  • Institute guidelines to safeguard the integrity of data and minimize data duplication.
  • Devise procedures for finding, editing, and fixing data errors.

Data Custodians

Data Custodian

Data custodians are subject matter experts and the initial source of contact for data in their functional area.  Their responsibilities are as follows:

Data Systems

  • Administer the IT systems that create, receive, store, process or transmit Institutional Data.
  • Oversee Data User access as prescribed and authorized by appropriate Data Stewards.
  • Understand and preserve data schemas and lineages.

Data Policies and Procedures

  • Implement the policy, procedures and best practices defined by Data Stewards.
  • Manage Data User access as prescribed and authorized by appropriate Data Stewards.
  • Maintain the technical controls that safeguard data.

Data Administrators

University staff members that, under the direction ofthe Data Custodian, have day-to-day operational responsibility for data capture, maintenance and dissemination. Data Administrators may also include departmental data and network systems managers and their staff.

Data Users

Individuals and organizations that access Institutional Data and Information, in coordination with data stewards and custodians, in order to perform their assigned duties or to fulfill their role in the University community.
